Tasmanian Dairy Industry
Farm Numbers & Production
The numbers of dairy farms in Tasmania have been declining over time, remaining around 440 for the last few years. However, farm size and per cow production have been increasing, resulting in an upwards trend in total milk production for the state.
Average cows per Tasmanian Farm
The average herd size for Tasmanian dairy farms has increased rapidly over the last ten years, with continual increase still shown. In 2000, Tasmanian dairy farms were milking on average 190 cows per farm. By 2015, the average Tasmanian dairy herd has increased to 386 cows (the Australian average herd size for 2014-15 was 284 cows per farm).
Total Cow Numbers
The increase in total cow numbers in Tasmania has accelerated over the last three years, however production per cow has on a whole been steady. Per cow production was down in 2013-14 as a result of a difficult season, but for 2014-15 Tasmanian achieved record production and good seasonal conditions. The general increase in per cow production is a result of better feeding with increases in irrigation, nitrogen fertiliser application, and increased grain feeding.
