The Tasmanian dairy industry produced a record 708 million litres of milk off approximately 460 dairy farms in 2008/09. This current season (2009/10) it is expected that milk production will fall by around 6% to 660 million litres, due to a combination of milk price reduction and unfavourable early season conditions . The average herd size is over 300 cows. Despite recent challenging seasonal conditions milk production will continue to grow in the future.

The Tasmanian industry has the potential to development further with improvements expected in milk price and in continued access to water for irrigation, land for new dairy development and Fonterra’s capacity to handle increased volumes of milk . There is scope for investment in current dairy farms and for new dairy farm conversions.
